project brief

Australia Offshore FPU Submarine Cable Feasibility

category
client

Woodside

start date

location

Scarborough Gas Field, Offshore Australia

the challenge

Woodside required an in-depth feasibility study to evaluate the deployment of a subsea fiber optic cable system to support its Floating Production Unit (FPU) operations in the Scarborough gas field, offshore Western Australia. The FPU would require secure, high-bandwidth communications for both operational and safety-critical systems—necessitating a robust and scalable subsea network solution tailored to offshore energy environments.

Key challenges included determining optimal routing and landfall scenarios, assessing seabed conditions, and aligning cable design with both regulatory frameworks and future scalability. Environmental impact, offshore construction logistics, and risk mitigation strategies all had to be factored into the solution. The feasibility study needed to provide technical clarity while enabling informed decision-making for long-term system integration and support.

project goals

  • Deliver a feasibility study for subsea cable deployment from shore to FPU

  • Evaluate technical requirements and environmental constraints in the Scarborough field

  • Identify optimal routing and connectivity solutions based on marine conditions

  • Recommend secure and scalable communications architecture

  • Support long-term connectivity planning for offshore operations

the result

WFN Strategies produced a comprehensive feasibility report detailing technical specifications, risk factors, and design recommendations for the subsea cable system. The study offered actionable insights into optimal routing, installation methodology, and long-term system integrity.

As part of the engagement, WFN Strategies delivered a feasibility study outlining technical requirements and optimal cable routing to support FPU connectivity, along with risk and environmental assessments to address potential challenges. Technical recommendations focused on enabling safe, efficient deployment and long-term operability of subsea cable infrastructure.

This enabled Woodside to move forward confidently into procurement planning for a robust FPU cable system aligned with industry best practices.
