WFN Strategies to Accomplish Cable Route Feasibility Study for Nunavik, Nunavut and Nunatsiavut

WFN Strategies has been awarded a contract following a call for tender conducted by Kativik Regional Government, a supramunicipal body with jurisdiction over the territory of Québec situated north of the 55th parallel of Canada, to provide system site visit and feasibility support for the proposed Eastern Arctic Undersea Fibre Optic Network (EAUFON) submarine telecoms cable system.

EAUFON is a planned submarine cable with landing points at 24 communities in Canada’s Nunavik, Nunavut and Nunatsiavut regions.  The EAUFON submarine cable system has an initial RFS of 2018.

This study is intended to be used for survey and construction planning, budget and economic modelling and hazard identification and risk management for the eventual construction of such a cable system to serve the electronic communication needs of the communities for the next several decades.  The results of the effort will establish a budgetary level pricing estimate from turnkey submarine cable construction companies.

The majority of the study will be concentrated on the feasibility of sea-based installation of submarine cable and associated wet plant, with landings in each of the specified communities to effect connection to pre-existing network end-points in Chisasibi and Charlottetown, NL.  One segment of this study will look in detail at the feasibility of installing suitable fibre optic cable between the communities of Kuujjuaq and Schefferville via any means feasible, to connect with network end-points located in Schefferville.

“We are excited to be working with the Kativik Regional Government and other partners in support of the EAUFON submarine cable project,” said WFN Strategies Managing Director, Wayne Nielsen.  “We look forward to supporting this new system and its goal of enhancing connectivity to the Canadian Arctic.”
